Olivet Discourse and Parallels

The Olivet Discourse is a speech Jesus made to his disciples from the Mount of Olives (Matt. 24:3; Mark 13:3) a few days before his crucifixion. Although most popular discussions of this discourse focus on the longest version found in Matthew 24-25, it properly refers also to the speech as presented in Mark 13 and in Luke 21:5-36. Serious study of this speech is greatly helped by comparing all three versions. In addition, there are three other passages in Matthew and Luke with significant parallels to material in the Olivet Discourse (Matt. 10:17-22, 39; Luke 12:35-48; 17:22-37).

The table provided here shows these passages in parallel columns to facilitate close comparisons of the three versions of the Olivet Discourse along with the three related passages. The text is taken from the English Standard Version (ESV). Text that appears in a different order than in the other Gospels is shown in italics. Unless stated otherwise, the text in the left column is from Matthew 24 and the text in the right column is from Luke 21.

Matthew 24
Matthew 10:17-22, 39
Mark 13 Luke 21:5-36
Luke 12:35-48; 17:22-37

24:1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple.

13:1 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”

21:5 And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings,

2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

he said, 6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying,

3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

7 And they asked him,

“Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

“Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”

4 And Jesus answered them,

5 And Jesus began to say to them,

8 And he said,

“See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

“See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.

“See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

10 Then he said to them,

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines.

“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences.

And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

10:17a Beware of men,

9 But be on your guard.

10:17b for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 10:18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.

For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.

12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

10:19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 10:20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

10:21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.

24:9a Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death,

24:9b/10:22a and you will be hated by all [nations] for my name’s sake.

13 And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake.

17 You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.

24:10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

[cf. Matt. 10:30]

18 But not a hair of your head will perish.

24:13/10:22b But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.

24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

15 So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

14 But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand),

20 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.

16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

21a Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,

17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

17:31 On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.

21:21b and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.

19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!

17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!

23a Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!

20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.

18 Pray that it may not happen in winter.

21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.

19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.

23b For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people.

22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.

23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.

21 And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.

17:22a And he said to the disciples,

17:22b “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.

17:23 And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them.

27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

17:24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.

17:25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

17:37a And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them,

28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

17:37b “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

24 “They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven,

24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven,

25 And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars,

and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world.

and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

29 And he told them a parable:

32 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.

28 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.

“Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

36 But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

32 But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away,

17:26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 17:27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

17:28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot— they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 17:29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all—

24:39b so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

17:30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

17:32 Remember Lot’s wife.

10:39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

17:33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.

24:40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.

[cf. 17:36 KJV]

17:34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.

41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.

17:35 There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.

42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

12:39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.

44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

12:40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.

34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake— for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.

12:35 Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, 12:36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 12:37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 12:38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants!”

37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”

12:41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 12:42a And the Lord said,

45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

12:42b “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 12:43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 12:44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 12:45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 12:46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful.

12:47 And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 12:48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.”
